"We lost our beautiful Saluki mix, Scout, on a Tuesday. We were devastated. She had been our baby when we found out that we could not have our own children. No dog could have taken her place, or won our hearts. Then came Tilly. When we went to the shelter to adopt a puppy we had seen online, cowering in the corner, with a skin disease, sagging nipples from a recent litter, and the saddest, most mistrusting eyes I’d ever seen, we met a little dog called Nina. There was something in her that called to me. Long story short, Nina became Tilly, and came home with us. From that moment on, something truly special happened for all of us. To know Tilly is to love Tilly. Once she found her way to love and trust us, we learned that this little girl from Puerto Rico is a sassy, little love nugget. Her personality is infectious. It is impossible to be sad. or angry, or world weary with her around. She is just funny. That sense of humor, which I am positive she is well aware of, gets us through some times that aren’t so funny. We currently live with my mom, who has been diagnosed with memory loss. We are thankful that dementia has not developed, but there are lots of days that we struggle as a family. Tilly’s presence in those difficult moments is such a gift. There she is with those slightly off balance. fuzzy ears, silly little grunting noises, and that insanely beautiful wagging tail to say, “Hey, I’m over here making it better. Now, get me a sweet potato treat.” The whole family can laugh and, in that moment, we feel normal again, all thanks to our canine comedienne. Tilly’s time with us got off to a bit of a rough start, when she ran away her first night home. We were beyond blessed to get her back through the magic of social media and kismet. We learned, however, that she needed to find a way to trust my husband. Now, I knew he was the sweetest, kindest, most gentle man alive, but Tilly didn’t. Over the next 12 months, I watched him take on every task with her---walking, feeding, training, and becoming the human she needed. He baby-talked her, plied her with treats, and offered her more love than she could ever have known. I don’t know that I have ever seen a more beautiful relationship, or a more amazing transformation. They fell in love with each other, and I fell even more in love with my husband. Through his experiences with Tilly, he felt such a sense of pride, accomplishment, and fulfillment at gaining her trust and finding a trusty friend. For me, Tilly balances my stressful life with her humor and ability to make me slow down. Every morning I start my day, sitting quietly in the dark, drinking my tea, and listening to the sound of her sleepy breathing as I rub her sweet belly. "Tea Time with Tilly" is a real thing, and it makes the start of my day so peaceful. Tilly’s presence on social media has become a bit of a sensation as people wait to read her views on the world and her life in “Tilly Talk.” Tilly makes all of our lives more fun, more sweet, and more bearable on the worst days. It’s true. We never had our own children, but Tilly’s presence in our life has fulfilled us in truly beautiful ways. Through laughter, tears, quiet moments, and the saving grace of a happy distraction, Tilly is our heart, our family."
